Rule of the Bone/ Russell Banks/ 5-12-08:

                            

Pages read: 10pgs. 90-100

 

Summary: Chappie and Russ go to the crack heads’ bus, and decide that they should change their names. They also see a newspaper and see that the Video Den is on the front page and in fire. They also decide to get tattoos.

 

 

My Questions:

 

1. Do you think by changing their names they change their identities?

 

2. Do you think they will stop hiding?

 

 

My Response: I think that by changing their names, it doesn’t change their identities because they will still be the same person except with different names. “I might even change my name.”

 

 

 

Rule of the Bone/ Russell Banks/ 5-14-08

 

Pages read: 9pgs. 101-110

 

Summary: Chappie changes his name to bone and Russ changes his to buck. They go and get tattoos and decide that they shouldn’t go back to the bus. They are also thinking they should move far and start a new life.

 

 

My Questions:

 

1. Do you think that by moving far away they won’t be invisible anymore?

 

2.     By starting a new life do you think they will still be invisible to some people?

My Response: I think that by moving far away they will still be invisible to some people, because if they move many people won’t know who they are and the people won’t care who they are. “someplace far away where we could start our young lives.”

 

 

 

Reading Journal 5/5 - 5/9

Rule of the Bone by Russell Banks – 4/6/08

 

Pages read: 7 pg 69-75

 

Summary: The bikers noticed that someone had stolen the VCR’s. They tied up Chappie until Russell came back so they can talk to him.

 

 My Questions:

 

1. Do you think Russell will blame Chappie?  

 

2. Do you think Chappie is changing?

 

 

My Response: I think that Chappie should try to escape because I think that the bikers will try to hurt him if Russell blames him. “I’m thinking just be ready to run ….. I’m thinking up my escape route.” I also think that Chappie is changing.

Summary: When Chappie is locked in Russ’ room he notices fire from the door and notices that its the heater. russ shows up by the window and they both get out and decide to hide out. 

 My Questions:

 

1. Where do you think the will go?

 My Response : I think that this will change Chappie. They also want nobody to know where they are.  “Maybe we’ll get lucky and people’ll see your car and thik we died in the fire too.”

Rule of the Bone by Russel Banks 4/8/08:

 

Pages read: 9 pg.  80-89

 

Summary: Chappie and Russ Decide to hide out and also steal a car.  They figure out that Bruce stayed at the house an died. They decide to go to some crack heads place and stay there as long as they can.

 

 

My Questions:

 

1. Do you think hiding out will change Chappies invisibility?

 

2. Do you think Chappie will change in anyway?

 

 

My Response : I think that Chappie wants to be invisible to everyone because he wants to hide out. I also think that Bruce’s death is going to change him in some way.” I didn’t want to talk about him anymore because of how my feelings were all mixed up.”

Rule of the Bone by Russel Banks

Summary: Chappie follows around some people he thinks are Canaidiens their names are Buster and Froggy. After a while he decides to tell them if they can buy him a slice of pizza, and sits down and talks with him and realizes they’re just normal Americans. He felt good talking to him because he felt he wasn’t ignored. 

 

 

My Questions:

 

1. Do you think Chappie will become friends with Buster?

 

2. Do you think Chappie will be a better person?

 

 

My Response : I think that he will become good friends with Buster because he listens to Chappie and what he has to say and Chappie doesn’t feel invisible with him, like when Chappie says “I was distracted by the little girl when the guy hit me with all the attention.”

Summary:Russ doesn’t have the money for the rent and the owner Wanda is telling them , if they don’t give her the money then they are going to get kicked out. Chappie tries to change the subject so they won’t have to pay the rent but it doesn’t work.

1.  Where do you think Chappie will go if they get kicked out?

 

2. Do you think he will go back with his mom? Why? 

 

 

My Response: I think that they will get kicked out of the apartment and that Chappie will go back to his parents house. “Go. And all of your friends upstairs, the mortorcycle gang. Get them out too. Summary: Chappie is staying at Russ’ house while he thinks how he can go back home. He daydreams on how it would be to home on Christmas, he thought to give a present to his mom but got caught stealing.

 

 

My Questions:

 

1.  Why do you think he stole?

 

2. Do you think Chappie will change?

 

 

My Response: I think that Chappie will try to change and go home because he says “I really want to go home to my mom’s now”.

 

 

 

 

What is Freedom?

  

I think that freedom is when you feel that you can accomplish anything without anyone telling you what to do or feeling threatened by another person. I don’t think that freedom is being to do whatever you want to do, but it’s just trying to accomplish something that you want to do, or saying what you think is right. Personal freedom and public security for me are both important because I think its important that you can feel free and do what you feel is right and be secured that nobody can tell you what you can and can not do.

Public security can help by making sure no one tells you what to do and you won’t feel threatened by any other person.

I think we shouldn’t be able to do whatever we want because, many people take freedom as a different thing from others. Some people see freedom as a positive while others as a negative. Even though it won’t harm anybody directly they can still do many things that are destructive.

We are not free to do whatever we want because there are laws that we have to follow, and if we were free to do whatever we want everything would be chaos because we all have different ideas of what freedom is to us. Freedom can be positive for some people while others might use freedom as a negative. I think that it depends on what you’re breaking the law for. Because if you break the law for a bad reason than no I don’t think is right to break the law but if you do something good than yes, for example if you think the government is doing something you think is wrong I think its right you try to do something you think is right for the situation without harming anybody. I think its important that you stand up on what you believe in because if you just obey the laws and don’t do anything people wont know what you believe in and it will be like your not getting your freedom, because you wont want to express yourself. I think freedom is also standing up on what you believe in and making sure your voice is heard.

What is an American?

           What is an American? Many different people have different ideas on what is an American, whether it’s positive or negative. For example some people might see them as lazy while others might say that they are hard workers. For some people an American is someone who works hard, patriotic, and wants to accomplish something to have a better life.

Many people might see Americans as hard workers, for example they work every day to support their family. They go to school to someday have a good job. Americans would be different if they didn’t have this trait because, they wouldn’t care about jobs or school, and they wouldn’t have anything to support their families.

Another trait that people see Americans as is, patriotic. For example, people might see them as patriotic for showing on what they believe in or fighting for their country. This is important because it shows that you love your country and that you support your country.

Also an American is someone who has a goal or wants to accomplish something to have a better life for them and their family. An example is people who go to school and works hard at it, they can have a career they enjoy doing. This trait is important because it shows that you have a plan for your life.

In conclusion people think that an American is a hard worker, patriotic, or someone that wants to accomplish something. I agree with these three traits because for me an American is someone who works hard and has a plan for their life, so they can support their family, and themselves.
